Interview : Emre Guven

GR: Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you live.

EG: At college I studied Graphic Design and worked a bit in the field for a couple of years. After moving to Istanbul in 2004, I did motion graphics and videos but soon my interest shifted from moving image to still frame. Istanbul has a dynamic, chaotic energy which really fuels me, but once in awhile I think of taking off to other places like the far east.

GR: Inspiration / influences?

EG: I don't have a specific source of inspiration. It can be the music I'm listening to or just my general mood. If I have to name a few, Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, Cindy Sherman and my all time favorite director Stanley Kubrick. They have all influenced me in the way they combine aesthetics and concept.

GR: What kind of camera(s) do you shoot with?

EG: I use both Phase One medium format camera with a digital back and Canon 5D.

GR: Favorite band(s) at the moment.

EG: Guns N Roses, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, White Denim. I'm very old school.

GR: How did you become interested in fashion photography?

EG: A chain reaction of coincidences. As I mentioned before, I was doing motion graphics when I first moved to Istanbul. During this time I shared an office with a couple of friends. One day we got robbed and all the computers and equipment got stolen. So we had to close down the firm -never underestimate the importance of insurance!-. After which I started working as an art director at a photography studio. After some time I started shooting my own photos and so eventually discovered my actual passion.

GR: Favorite alcoholic beverage.

EG: Beer. I'm a simple man.

GR: Do you have any tips/tricks to share with someone just starting out in photography?

EG: Play around, be experimental! I just bought a new small film camera, Ricoh, with which I randomly take photographs with. This helps me to shift my frame of mind and think out of the box. It doesn't matter whether you're a beginner or pro. You should always explore. I guess the curiosity to discover the new is what keeps me going.

GR: You have $8 in your wallet, what do you spend it on?

EG: I like french fries.

Smells like teen spirit.

Today is a Pink Floyd/Soundgarden/Nirvana kind-of-day. Eating life away by drawing and listening to dope music on a Sunday afternoon sounds good enough to me. Currently been obsessed with Daphne Groeneveld and her huge, yet luscious lips. It's going to take me several practices to get them exactly right.
